Why I started the UNBEATABLE podcast

This week, the UNBEATABLE podcast launches. This podcast has been about two years in the making, and a team of people have put a lot of work into helping me launch it. I’m both excited and a bit overwhelmed by this new challenge.
I’m excited about the opportunities this podcast presents to reach people. However, I didn’t really understand how hard the work would be to get this podcast established before I began this endeavor. The idea of putting this kind of work into a regular podcast has made me a bit overwhelmed right now.
I feel it’s necessary to let you know exactly why I’m doing to this, though.  Here are the top 3 questions you might be asking yourself about this shiny new podcast.

Why a podcast?

There is a proliferation of podcasts all over the world. If you do a simple web search, you will find that there’s a podcast on just about every topic imaginable. There’s even a podcast dedicated to the weird history of garden gnomes. I’m serious.  If you don’t believe me… go search for yourself. Before launching this podcast, I had to do some serious thought about whether or not I wanted to add to the white noise in this arena of the internet.
Ultimately, what settled me on the discipline and hard work of cranking out a podcast is the people that I hope it will reach. From the first episode of this podcast, I had a very specific kind of person in mind.
I keep in the front of my mind the millions of people who have no interest in church but consider themselves deeply spiritual people that this podcast has the potential to reach.
You don’t have to be a sociologist to understand that for the church to reach this category of people, the church is going to have to think differently. This podcast is first and foremost an attempt to reach people that have no interest in going to church. I chose to use a podcast as the format to reach this group of people, because they’re already listening to podcasts on a variety of topics.
I simply thought, Why not create a podcast that tries to grab the attention at the same time that it touches the soul of someone far from Jesus?

Why THIS topic?

The next question is very easy to answer. The reason why I selected this topic of all the topics that are available to talk about in my podcast is because this topic is where I have spent most of my adult life.
When I look back over my friends and contacts that I have stayed in touch with over the years, there is one thing that they all have in common: They have all overcome some incredible circumstances in life. I chose to use the word UNBEATABLE to describe the common characteristic of the people God has brought in my life.
I don’t consider myself an expert on very many things in life. However, I have spent most of my adult life dealing with challenges and refusing to give in when circumstances became difficult.  Unbeatable became the simple word to describe the people I know that have chosen to get back up and attack life when tragic circumstances knocked them down.

Why now?

The final question that you may be asking about this podcast is about the timing. Why now? There is no easy time to start a new challenge. In fact, for me this may be one of the worst times of my ministry to start this podcast. However, I also believe that this topic is as urgent today as it has ever been in history.
While the world continues to fight against a global pandemic that caught the world off guard, people are searching for answers. There are millions of people grieving and looking for advice on how to handle the pain after the loss of a loved one. People are struggling after the financial fallout of shutting down the global economy. Many are looking for answers on how to overcome their fear and get back to some sort of normal life.
I can’t think of a better time than now for a podcast dedicated to giving people the strength to overcome challenges.
If you want to join the challenge and help reach people who need this message, make sure you subscribe via Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts
